Stephanie

I came from a home broken by divorce. With my father’s complete absence from the home and my mother’s absence in trying to make a living, I began drinking at the age of twelve. I attempted suicide at the age of thirteen by overdosing on pills. A therapist came to the conclusion that I was manic depressive.

Despite my emotional state I graduated high school in the top ten percent of my class. By my junior year of college I was inducted into the National Honor Society for Psychology. All seemed perfect, but behind closed doors I still struggled with anxiety and depression. I self-medicated with drugs and alcohol. In 2002 my drug use landed me in the hospital. I had a heart attack at age twenty-one.

I spent thirty days in an inpatient rehab facility. It was during this recovery period that I first accepted Jesus as my Savior. I knew nothing about being a Christian or the Bible. All I knew was now I had a guilty conscience and I still felt depressed. I turned back to using drugs and alcohol. I stayed in the vicious cycle for another five years.
In my heart I knew I was not living the way God intended. When I was ready to change I asked my Mother to help me find a place that could help me turn my life around. My mother’s church referred us to the New Life Women’s Center.

Since I’ve been a student at New Life I have learned that God can and will use all that was intended for my destruction and turn it around to use it for His glory. God has healed me in many areas in my life. I am learning how to trust God and accept His mercy. There is a hope and a future for every one of us. Jesus gave us that hope. He died so that we could live!
